Tutor Japan is the education service of A2 Lab LLC, a Tokyo company that has worked with international-school families in Japan since 2007. We support children from age three to Grade 12 / Year 13 — in their day-to-day learning, in their applications to schools in Japan and overseas, and in the summer programmes they attend abroad.
When we started, very few Japanese children attended international schools here, and families had little information to work from. That is no longer true, but the opposite problem has taken its place: there is a great deal of information and very little guidance. Our work is to sit on the family's side of the table and help them choose well.
Our team and our tutors work in English and Japanese. For a family, that means one point of contact from the first enquiry to graduation. For a school or programme overseas, it means a partner in Japan who can explain your requirements accurately in Japanese — and who stays with the family after the placement is made.
Representative: Asami Akiyama, founder and CEO. A message from her is on the 代表のご挨拶 page (Japanese).
Families usually come to us for one of the three, and stay for the others
as their child moves through school.
Lessons in English, on the family's terms.
One-to-one lessons at home in central Tokyo, at our facility, or online, plus small weekend group classes. Subject support and literacy, curriculum work (IB DP, AP, A-level, (i)GCSE) and test preparation (SAT, SSAT, TOEFL, IELTS, MAP, ISEB).
From entry in Japan to school and university abroad.
Entry and transfer to international schools in Japan, UK boarding schools, and overseas universities — school selection, application forms and references, entrance testing, interview practice and application essays.
A summer abroad, properly prepared for.
Overseas summer schools and camps — academic courses, sport, art and design. We are an official partner of a number of programmes and place students with them each year, handling the family side in Japanese from enquiry to departure.
Most of our partners are outside Japan. They work with us because reaching Japanese families —
and supporting them properly once they enrol — takes someone on the ground here.
We are careful about what we take on: we only introduce programmes we would put in front of our own families, and we do not guarantee admission outcomes.
